Big news for the dive community and for ocean literacy! UNESCO Ocean has officially endorsed a new project led by major diving organisations as part of the UN Ocean Decade. The goal? To harness the power of recreational diving to strengthen people’s connection with the ocean. The project builds on Scuola D’Amare, an initiative launched in Italy in 2019 by PADI with the backing of the Ministry of Education. I had the chance to collaborate on the early development of Scuola D’Amare while working at the PADI AWARE Foundation, alongside PADI Regional Manager Fabio Figurella whose drive and dedication helped turn a bold idea into a nationwide programme. Super excited to see how it’s grown! Looking forward to seeing how this further develops, especially as more sectors get involved in shaping a more ocean-literate society. 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗗𝗠𝗧 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗘𝗨 Two new DAN Educators (Michal Kosut in Poland, Jeroen Van Haudt in Belgium) are now able to teach the Diver Medical Technician (DMT) course. Together with Chantelle Newman (UK), they will now expand the network of pros able to handle complex diving emergencies. The DMT course provides the advanced skills needed to respond effectively to diving accidents, focusing on oxygen therapy, vital signs, and hyperbaric first aid. The 9th marked the start of the international #MPA4Change Workshop in beautiful Ustica, bringing together students from Croatia, France, and Italy to tackle one of the most urgent issues of our time: 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞. With Mediterranean Sea surface temperatures reaching record highs—3°C above the historical average, the urgency to act has never been greater. Through 𝘊𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘻𝘦𝘯 𝘚𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦, participants are learning to monitor climate change impacts using key indicators like thermophilic fish species, mass mortality events, and the health of Pinna nobilis and Posidonia oceanica. After an engaging theory session, students are now in the field with support from Mare Nostrum Diving, diving into action with hands-on monitoring using the Visual Census and Mass Mortality protocols. #ClimateChange #CitizenScience #MarineConservation #Ustica
